Description

West Bank Park comprises 50.44 acres of Willamette River frontage in the River Road area, between Maurie Jacobs Park and the Owosso Bike Bridge. It is part of the Willamette Greenway which runs from Eugene to Portland. A number of informal river access points may be found along the West Bank Path, as well as a 12’ wide paved bike and pedestrian path, and one of four sections of the nearly 14 mile Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System running through this park for 2.1 miles. Heron Pond and Heron Slough may be viewed from the new Merry Lane path and footbridge which connects to the bike path system.

Patches of more mature riparian forest, which dominated the area historically, are interspersed with areas of newly planted riparian woodlands, as well as several areas of remnant upland oak prairie. The hazelnut cottonwood grove and other wooded areas teem with songbirds in the early morning, while bald eagles are often seen perched in tall trees along the river. A recently restored remnant side channel at the northern end supports juvenile Chinook salmon, beaver, herons, and shorebirds, among other native fish and wildlife species.
