2. How does the respondent receive the papers?

The Lane County Sheriff's Office will attempt to serve the respondent for ten days. If you have further information regarding where the respondent may be served, please notify the Lane County Sheriff's office. You may call 541-682-4150 after 9pm to inquire if the order has been served.

You may have someone other than the Lane County Sheriff’s Office serve the papers. Talk to the court clerk’s office or Victim Services personnel for more information.

4. How do I report a violation?

Dial 9-1-1 first. After reporting to police, notify the Lane County District Attorney’s Office at 541-682-4261.
Your order is valid in all 50 states, and remains in effect even if your address changes. If you have an order from another state or county, it may be required for you to register that order in the Lane County court.
Keep a copy of your order with you at all times.

5. When should I renew my order?

Restraining Orders, including Elder and Disabled orders, remain in effect for one year and may be renewed without an additional incident. You must apply to renew before the order expires. Renewal hearings are held at the same time in the morning as other protective orders.
Stalking Orders are of unlimited duration unless limited by law.

7. What should I do to plan for my safety?

Tips for ensuring your safety include:

• Avoid events where you know the abuser will be
• Change your patterns; hours you come and go, grocery store, routes to day care or school. Be ready to get away quickly if necessary.
• Get caller ID and block your ID when you make a call (push *67 before you dial)
• Limit access to personal information; get a post office box, change your phone number, don’t give out your social security number easily
