Electric Scooter Launch Party
The City of Eugene and Cascadia Mobility are excited to announce the launch of our new Electric Scooter Pilot Program! Superpedestrian, the selected provider of shared e-scooters, is rolling out its brightly-colored silver and yellow e-scooters on Friday, March 31st. They will start with 200 e-scooters and ramp up to a full fleet of 600 over the coming months.
The e-scooter program will serve the whole of Eugene, prioritizing safety, accessibility, sustainability, and equity. The new service will include some seated e-scooters that are more accessible to older riders and people with disabilities, and will service the Eugene City limits, including the University of Oregon campus. Superpedestrian e-scooters will be operated by Cascadia Mobility, the local nonprofit operator of the PeaceHealth Rides bike share system.
Join us for the E-Scooter Launch Party on Friday, March 31st from 11am – 1pm at EWEB’s River Edge Public Plaza at the Fountains (500 E 4th Ave) for discounted test rides, safety demonstrations, and more!
An Electric Scooter Program as Unique as Eugene
The City of Eugene is not taking the introduction of e-scooters to our transportation system lightly. We know they are a powerful tool for meeting our climate recovery, mode-shift, and equity goals. We also know that other cities have experienced challenges with safe and effective electric scooter implementation. Read on for what makes electric scooters in Eugene unique!
Exclusive Partnership: Through a competitive process, the City of Eugene selected Superpedestrian as its exclusive e-scooter provider since they have some of the safest, most stable electric scooters on the market. The City of Eugene will not allow additional scooter companies to operate in Eugene, avoiding many of the issues seen in other cities with 3-5 scooter companies operating at once.
Local Expertise: Unlike most e-scooter share programs across the country, the Eugene program will be operated by Cascadia Mobility, the local non-profit who operates the PeaceHealth Rides bike share. Cascadia Mobility has in-depth knowledge about the transportation landscape and understands our unique community needs, allowing for a tailored e-scooter program that will serve the community.
Cutting Edge Technology: Superpedestrian was spun out of the MIT Sustainable City Lab in 2013 in order to solve urban transportation challenges. They spent 8 years creating technology that makes micromobility sustainable, efficient, and safe at scale. The Superpedstrian scooters were launched in 2020 and feature the most advanced technology on the market, such as AI-powered geofencing, GPS enabled speed enforcement, tip-over detection, real-time diagnostics, and more.
Designated Parking Zones: The City of Eugene, Cascadia Mobility, the University of Oregon, and Superpedestrian have all joined together to create a parking strategy that will minimize sidewalk clutter and preserve public spaces. Select areas in town, such as Downtown and the UO campus, will feature designated parking zones. In these areas, e-scooter users will not be able to end their ride outside one of the designated parking areas. In the rest of the city, users will receive a $1 rebate on their ride cost when they park their scooter in a parking hub. All users will be required to take a photo of their parked scooter before being able to end their ride.
One-Year Pilot Program: The electric scootershare program is a one-year pilot. City staff will be monitoring the program throughout the year to make sure it is meeting city goals and serving the community’s needs. At the end of the pilot year, the City will determine either (a) to continue the program for an additional period of time, either as is or with modifications, or (b) to not continue the program.
