EPD SUV

At 12:54 a.m. on December 1, Eugene Police officers were dispatched to respond to a report of a man trying to break into a vehicle in the 3700 block of Pachysandra. The man appeared to have been walking up and down the street, going to numerous houses. An officer saw the man, later identified as Gabriel Aaron Vansteenwyk, age 26, of Eugene, in a vehicle. When Vansteenwyk saw the officer, he fled on foot, including jumping fences.  A Lane County Sheriff’s Office  K9 unit was requested and Deputy Chris Gardner and K9 Ripp arrived on scene to assist.

Vansteenwyk was located in a backyard by K9 Ripp, who was deployed to take him into custody. However, Vansteenwyk fought with the K9, multiple EPD police officers and LCSO deputies.  He was eventually taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment before being lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle, Interfering with a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Burglary Tool or Theft Device, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.
