On March 25 at 1:17 p.m. Eugene Police Street Crimes Unit had been in the Ed Cone/Arrowsmith and Owen Loop areas to conduct frequent patrol checks after a number of complaints from area businesses of issues with crime increasing in the area. SCU had recently recovered two stolen cars leaving the area in addition to receiving complaints by residents. Two of the SCU officers were in the area and one of them noticed, Joseph Paul Jared, age 31, of Eugene, who they knew had three warrants for his arrest and a suspended driver’s license.
Jared was in a Hyundai sedan and officers watched as he began to drive away. An SCU officer activated his emergency lights as Jared turned north onto Beltline and observed Jared tossing a chunk of a substance out his window and radioed to other SCU officers. One of them was nearby and stopped and located the chunk, identified subsequently as methamphetamine. Once Jared was stopped, officers found additional evidence of narcotics, and some tools that had been recently reported as stolen from a vehicle break-in discovered by the owner on March 24 in the morning.
Jared was charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence, Possession of a Controlled Substance Methamphetamine, and his warrants, and lodged at Lane County Jail.
The tools were recovered and efforts made to contact the victim to return them.
