[ARCHIVED] EPD Captures California Fugitive from Justice

EPD Patrol Vehicle

Eugene Police received an officer-safety bulletin regarding a suspect involved in a California officer-involved shooting and who has been targeting law enforcement. EPD contacted Riverside, California Federal Marshal's office and Corning Police Department in California.  The suspect, Garrett Roy Wilson, age 39, of Menifee, CA, had been reported to have broken into Corning Police Department’s  parking area and stolen a police short-barrel rifle from a secured Corning PD vehicle. Further information was given that Wilson was armed and dangerous and had targeted law enforcement officer residences to steal firearms.

On January 15 at 11:31 p.m., an EPD officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle driving the wrong way on W. 6th approaching his patrol vehicle.  The officer initiated a traffic stop and Wilson backed his vehicle away, into the McDonald’s parking lot. The officer was able to persuade Wilson to remain on scene and in his vehicle while other officers arrived. Wilson was safely taken into custody without further incident. Wilson was lodged for Fugitive from Justice and then after further investigation, he was also charged with five counts of Theft in the First Degree, five counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, five counts of Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Short-Barreled Rifle, one count of Obliteration of the Identification Number of a Firearm, two counts of Importation of a Short-Barreled Rifle, and the Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine.

The investigation is ongoing and could yield further charges.
