At 11:17 a.m.. on December 10 Officers were dispatched to Motel 6 at 3690 Glenwood Drive after staff reported two men who appeared to be attempting to steal hotel guest’s SUV. The first man, Russell Darrin Allen, age 30, of Springfield, had been inside the vehicle and was located by an officer on Glenwood Drive. After Allen was detained, police located firearm in his backpack. It was later learned it had been stolen from a family member.
The second man, Jose Alberto Flores Acuna, age 24, was located at the vehicle and refused to show the K9 officer his hands and refused commands multiple times. Flores Acuna reacted by reaching further into the vehicle and there was concern based on Flores Acuna’s movements and his refusal to show his hands, that he could be trying to access a weapon. The K9 officer continued to give him commands, but Flores Acuna was not compliant. K9 Cwyk was released to detain him and was able to get Flores Acuna to the ground, where he was safely taken into custody.
Allen was charged with Theft in the First Degree - Firearm, Possession Concealed Weapon - Firearm, Attempt Unauthorized Use Vehicle, Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree, Theft in the Third Degree, two counts of Theft in the Second Degree, and Possession of Methamphetamine.
