Join us for a lively conversation about the acclaimed book, which has been described as “The Hate U Give” meets “Just Mercy.” This unflinching yet uplifting novel explores the racist injustices of the U.S. justice system, following a seventeen-year-old struggling to get her father exonerated from a wrongful death sentence. As a teen and a UO student, Kimberly Johnson held leadership positions in social justice organizations in Eugene. She now serves as UO Assistant Vice Provost for Advising and Director for the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence.

As part of the University of Oregon’s 2020 - 2021 African American Workshop and Lecture Series, the author of “This Is My America” will discuss her inspirations, delving into the themes of how racial injustice in our criminal justice system leads to mass incarceration and excessive punishment. Kimberly Johnson will discuss the 2020 elections and “our responsibility in not only our electoral process, but broader acts of social justice and civic engagement.”

Early Education Workshop: Supporting Black Children - Part 1

Hadiyah Miller's 20-year career in the field of Early Childhood Education has been dedicated to advocating for anti-racism and anti-bias practices, equity and access to quality education for all children and their families. "Supporting Black Children Part 1" examines how African American children's multiple intelligences, learning styles, and personality traits link to planning for the classroom environment and curriculum.
(Note: "Supporting Black Children Part 2" will be offered on March 13 with sign-ups starting Feb. 20. Participants can attend either session or both.)

These friendly experts help job seekers make career plans, become more employable, improve job search skills, and find work. Topics include online applications, resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, community resources, networking, training scholarships. This service is free and available in English and Spanish.
