Eugene School District 4J and Bethel School District students who live outside City of Eugene limits are now eligible for a free Eugene Public Library card.
All enrolled students will receive library card sign-up information in back-to-school mailings from the school districts.
The two public school districts include a total of approximately 1,200 students who live outside the limits of the City of Eugene. The usual non-resident household fee of $11 per month will be waived to include these students. Now, all Eugene School District 4J and Bethel School District students who do not yet have a library card can get one free, whether they live inside or outside City limits.
This change is made possible by a three-year pilot partnership of the Eugene Public Library Foundation, Eugene Public Library, Eugene School District 4J, and Bethel School District.
Eugene Public Library Director Will O'Hearn says, "A library card is the most powerful back-to-school supply. Working together with our partners, we can now ensure that every single student in 4J and Bethel School District can get a library card free of charge. We’re very happy to be able to support our whole community by increasing access to crucial resources for educational success.”
Expanding access to library books and resources is good for students and for the community. The ability to read at or above grade level in third grade is a key indicator for future academic and professional success. Currently, more than half of Eugene's and Oregon's third graders read below grade level.
Eugene School District 4J Interim Superintendent Cydney Vandercar says, "Libraries open up a world of learning and enrichment opportunities that promote literacy, a love of learning, and success in school and beyond. Every student in 4J and Bethel schools will now be able to access both their school library and our local public library and the rich array of resources it offers year round."
A Eugene Public Library card offers students opportunities including ongoing development of reading skills, researching school projects, building study skills, working with live online tutors, and more. In addition to serving as a key to a universe of information and educational support in print and online, a library card offers nearly limitless opportunities to read for pleasure and enjoy movies, music, magazines, and more at no cost.
