[ARCHIVED] Pedestrian-Vehicle Crash During March

UPDATE:

Eugene Police Major Collision Investigation team is investigating this case and Special Investigations Unit detectives are out canvassing the area where the incident occurred to obtain any possible video. Police do not yet have video of the encounter between the vehicle and the pedestrian. Investigators are seeking any help from the public with specific video of the incident itself (not the vehicle driving away or the crowd, but specifically of the crash). Anyone with such video is asked to call 1-541-262-5388 (the number requires a “1” for this particular number).

The incident occurred at 6:23 p.m. near the intersection of N. Adams Street and Clark Street during a children’s protest march that was travelling through the area in the street. The pedestrian, Isiah Walter Wagoner, age 29, is reported to have attempted to block traffic at the westside of the roundabout intersection so protesters could get through safely. There are conflicting accounts by witnesses of what occurred, and the vehicle involved, driven by Travis Paul Waleri, age 34, left the scene after a collision involving Wagner.

The group located the vehicle near the 200 block of N. Adams and called police. Some mail had been observed inside the vehicle that had the driver’s address. Approximately 20 to 25 people ran through an apartment complex in the area, attempting to locate the driver. They located the driver’s apartment and began trying to get the driver to exit. An officer intervened to get the group away from the door so the driver could be contacted. The situation became tense with the group yelling and refusing to come down while calling for the driver to be arrested. The officer ordered the group down and most came down the stairs. One woman refused until she was advised she was interfering with the investigation. The officer was then able to make contact with and then detain the driver for questioning.

Eugene Police understands there is a clear public interest and need for a full investigation and has dedicated resources to this. Investigators are following up and will submit findings to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
