[ARCHIVED] EPD Makes Arrest in Ongoing Business Burglary Series

Three west Eugene businesses reported multiple burglaries over a two-week period between May 20 and June 2, 2020. During this time the Bi-Mart at 4780 Royal Avenue was targeted five times, the Big Lots at 1960 Echo Hollow Road once, and the El Charro Mexican Restaurant at 4712 Royal Avenue once. The suspect was seen on video breaking windows and entering the stores to steal merchandise.  

 

Eugene Police Property Crimes Unit detectives followed up on the case with Patrol. Through video and forensic evidence Andres Varillas, age 31, from Eugene, was identified as the suspect. He was initially arrested in one of the cases on May 28.  Since then he has been tied to the remaining cases.  

 

Varillas faces six counts of Burglary in the Second Degree, one count of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree, and seven counts of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.  Between the cost of repairs to the stores and theft of merchandise the combined loss is approximately $15,000.
