Renovation and expansion plans update

Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center

Thank you again, community members, for voicing your support for the future of Eugene Parks and Rec by voting for the $39 million bond and $3.15 million levy in May 2018.

Rec is hard at work on our bond goals of caring for and making the most of what we have and serving the entire community. We have begun the design phases of the two top bond priorities: renovations and expansions to Campbell Community Center and Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center. Below is an update on both projects.

Campbell Community Center

Campbell Community Center is the second oldest senior center on the west coast and has been serving Eugeneans since 1968 with the last major expansion completed in 1990.

The 2018 bond included $5 million to renovate and expand Campbell and add a health and wellness component to the building.

Here are some facts about the upcoming renovation and expansion of Campbell:

  • We have contracted with a local firm, Pivot Architects, to design the building. We are currently in the schematic design phase.
  • Today, the building is 10,551 square feet, including the woodshop. The addition will add spaces for a variety of fitness activities, more socializing and improved circulation and connectivity.
  • Groundbreaking is expected to begin in summer 2019 and construction is expected to be completed by summer 2020. We’ve contracted with McKenzie Construction to complete the renovation.
  • The project team and center staff hope to keep the building open as much as possible during construction. If parts of the building can’t be used, our goal is to continue providing programs, classes and services in an alternate location.

We want your feedback!

Community members are invited to attend an informational and feedback meeting on the proposed design at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at Campbell Community Center.

We invite you to take this short survey to give your input on the renovation.

Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center

Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center is nearing 50 years old and has met its capacity in serving our growing Bethel population. Expansion and renovation — thanks to $10.4 million from the bond — will meet increased demand for pool space for recreation and competitive swimmers.

Here are some facts about the upcoming renovation of Echo Hollow:

  • We have contracted with a local firm, Robertson Sherwood Architects, to design the renovation. We are currently in the conceptual design phase. The architects have begun to gather information through public listening sessions and plan to hold at least on more session for feedback.
  • We hope to break ground early next year and construction will take a year or so to complete. Construction company bidding will occur when the design and construction documents are complete.
  • Amazon Pool (2600 Hilyard St.) will be open for competitive and recreational swimming during the time that Echo Hollow is closed for construction.

We want your feedback! We will have public meetings and a survey for you soon. Stay tuned.

We will continue to keep you updated on a regular basis, and you can always visit eugparksandrec.org to learn more about these projects and the entire Eugene Parks and Rec System Plan.
