In order to operate freight trains safely and efficiently, Union Pacific maintains an annual vegetation control program. As part of this regular maintenance, Union Pacific will have crews working in Eugene city limits May 1-3.
Why does Union Pacific spray for vegetation?
Union Pacific addresses vegetation for public safety as well as the safety of our employees and train operations. Federal and state regulations require railroads to maintain a vegetation control program. Vegetation management is a critical part of fire prevention. It’s also important for the safety of our employees and the trains we operate. Cutting and spraying vegetation ensures our employees can easily see railroad signals and railroad crossings as they operate trains in the city. Vegetation management also reduces fire hazards.
How often does Union Pacific treat vegetation in Eugene?
Our goal is to treat our right of way along Union Pacific tracks once a year. We only retreat in areas where the treatment was not effective.
What time will Union Pacific be spraying?
We apply spray early in the morning, the calmest time of the day. Daily application is done around the train operations.
What type of product will be used?
Payload or Oust Extra, Accord, Induce and Glyphosate are the primary products used for vegetation management.
