On Sunday, September 22, thousands of people will flood the streets of downtown Eugene to celebrate healthy, active living while playing in the City’s largest public spaces – the streets. It’s all part of the ninth annual Eugene Sunday Streets event. This year’s event is bigger and larger than ever.
EUG Parade and Pet Promenade
The EUG Parade and Pet Promenade kick off the fun at 11 a.m. at the Park Blocks. People are encouraged to get their seats early. More than 50 community groups, businesses, bands, and others have signed up to take part in the parade and strut their stuff through the streets in style.
Sunday Streets Activities
Once the last float has cleared, the streets will open for all to enjoy. Activity centers at Monroe Park, Kesey Square, WOW Hall, and the Park Blocks will be filled with live music, games, food carts, bike tune-ups, and free classes.
There are several new additions to this year’s lineup, as well as some returning favorites:
- Expanded route that includes Broadway and 8th Avenue (new)
- Health hub with free PiYo (Pilates-yoga fusion) and ballet classes (new)
- Transportation options hub for free helmets, Safe Routes to School Traffic Garden, and other resources to help people walk and roll
- Several stages along the route where musicians will perform
The event is free and open to the public.
Street Closures
The street closures will impact people driving. Roads will start closing around 8 a.m. on the day of the event. Cars will be let through at Washington, Jefferson and Pearl streets. The road closures will last until 4:30 p.m.
Get Active and Be Sustainable
Eugene’s Transportation team hosts Sunday Streets with the hopes of not only promoting active lifestyles but reducing the dependence on cars by encouraging walking and biking, increasing the awareness of sustainable transportation options, increasing neighborhood livability, and creating new opportunities for businesses.
