[ARCHIVED] Man Stabbed in Front of Coffee Shop

Gabriel Hayes Pemble

At about 7:08 a.m. Saturday, July 6, a man having coffee inside the Starbucks at Willamette and Broadway went outside and stabbed another man who was sitting at a table outside the cafe. It does not appear at this point that the two knew each other.

During the incident, two bystanders bravely intervened, prevented the suspect from leaving, and also got the knife away from the him, and detained him until police could arrive. Police were quickly on scene and arrested the suspect, Gabriel Hayes Pemble, age 40, of Eugene.

Bystanders rendered emergency aid to the victim and police took over prior to the arrival of Eugene Springfield Fire EMS. The victim, a Eugene man in his early 70s, was taken to a local hospital where he remains in treatment for life-threatening injuries.

One of the bystanders, who detained Pemble, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries he sustained during the incident.

Pemble was charged with Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.
