[ARCHIVED] Man Arrested for Assault on Public Safety Officer

Forrest Wayne Sims, age 40, arrested for assaulting an officer

On July 7, at 11:36 p.m., an officer was conducting a routine patrol check at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Coburg Road, and observed a man, later identified as Forrest Wayne Simms, age 40, heating up a spoon. The officer contacted Sims and noted there was a pile of marijuana over a concrete bench.

Sims turned his back on the officer during the contact in an attempt to leave. The officer attempted to detain Sims, but Sims spun around and tried to take the officer to the ground by diving at his legs, and managed to lift the officer and thrust him onto the concrete bench. Sims dragged the officer off the bench and the officer ended up on his back. The officer continued to fight out of this with Sims grabbing the officer’s firearm and try to remove it from the holster. The officer eventually managed to get Sims in a hold to prevent him from rising. A taser was ineffective, but the officer was able to maintain the hold until other officers could arrive.

Sims appeared extremely high to the arriving officers and was hostile. He was taken into custody on charges of Assault Public Safety Officer, Interfering, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance Methamphetamine, False Information to Police Officer, Parole Violation.
