This weekend will welcome warm temperatures to the area. Eugene Springfield Fire would like to remind community members who head to the river to cool off to be very cautious. The rivers are unpredictable and very dangerous, not to mention extremely cold this time of year. With the recent flooding there are a lot of new obstacles in the water including fallen trees and limbs which are just under the surface of the water and could cause a drowning hazard.
Water Safety Tips
Follow these tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe as the temperatures increase:
- Wear a personal flotation device (also called a life jacket) when in and around water. Never rely on “toys” such as inner tubes, air mattresses, or water wings to stay afloat.
- Know the water – water may be colder, deeper, and the current swifter than you realize. Very cold water can quickly overwhelm even the strongest swimmer. Also know what lies downstream. While the water may be calm where you are, conditions can change rapidly. Heed all warning signs.
- Never mix alcohol with swimming, diving, or boating. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, and coordination, and reduces your body’s ability to stay warm.
- Let someone know where you are putting in and where you will be taking out when floating the river.
