As the suspect is a juvenile, we will not be releasing his name.

The 17-year-old male victim is being treated at a local hospital. According to a physician, police officer and bystander efforts with emergency medical aid contributed to saving the victim’s life.

The result is having the primary suspect in custody within 13 hours of the incident.

PREVIOUSLY RELEASED INFORMATION

At 10:05 this morning, September 25, Eugene Police immediately deployed patrol units to respond to report of shots fired in the 2900 block of Bailey Lane. Eugene Police officers and a bystander provided immediate aid to a person on the ground, who was then taken by Eugene Springfield Fire EMS to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. We have no update on the person’s condition.

All on-duty EPD School Resource Officers immediately self-deployed to Monroe Middle School to protect the students and staff.

As a precaution, Monroe Middle School was locked down initially and then went into lock out (keeping students inside). Sheldon High School, Buena Vista Elementary, St. Paul Parish School, and Holt Elementary School were on lock-out also as a precaution. The latter four schools have been released. Monroe Middle School is still on lock-out. The children inside Monroe Middle School are safe. The incident did not involve the school; it was just proximate to the school. The students and staff at the school are safe and they are continuing their school day.

EPD is working with School District 4J on a plan for the 3:30 p.m. release time. Until that time, we are asking parents to avoid going to the school until the normal release time, as the investigation is continuing on the street and traffic has to be managed to avoid vehicles in the investigative area. Bailey Lane is closed from Coburg Road to Bogart. For Monroe Middle School release, parents and buses will come off Coburg Road onto Bailey Lane and enter the School’s west parking lot and exit from the same lot back out to Coburg Road. Please follow traffic officer directions. St. Paul student families will access their school via Satre Street and Bogart Lane.

The involved suspect is a male, driving a small white sedan. Police believe the suspect and the victim likely knew one another, and this was not a random act. The investigation is ongoing with the entire section of Bailey Lane a crime scene. Out on the scene are the Forensic Evidence Unit, Investigations Unit, Patrol, and we have a Lane County Sheriff’s Office K9. These are here to aid the investigation.
