On December 30, 2017, at 02:26 a.m., Eugene Police and Eugene/Springfield Fire responded to a single-vehicle crash on Bailey Hill Road at Four Oaks Grange Road. Eugene officers arrived on scene to find an occupant of the vehicle non responsive and not breathing. They started life saving measures until medics and Fire arrived to take over life saving measures. These attempts were not successful and the victim succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. The victim has been identified as Mack Wallace Carothers, age 24, of Eugene.
Multiple Eugene officers and a police K9 responded to the area in attempt to locate another person whom witness advised fled from the scene. The identity of the subject who fled is unconfirmed at this time. Eugene Police Major Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
Initial investigation shows the involved vehicle to be a 1981 Toyota SR5 pickup. The vehicle was traveling west on Baily Hill Road at a high rate of speed, lost control and struck a tree on the side of the roadway just prior to Four Oaks Grange Road. This is an ongoing investigation and we have no other details to release at this time. Baily Hill Road between S Bertelsen Road and Parliament Road were closed for several hours.
