On January 20, 2017, President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States. There are several free speech events planned on Friday, January 20, and Saturday, January 21.
People in the city of Eugene are entitled to safely exercise their constitutional rights of free speech and peaceable assembly without interference, harassment, intimidation, or fear of retaliation by any individual or group. Those who choose to exercise these rights have a corresponding responsibility to do so in a peaceful and respectful manner. The Eugene Police Department has the responsibility of maintaining the safety and security of all community members. To that end, EPD has been working with other City staff, the University of Oregon, and other partners to prepare for the inauguration.
All of us have a vested interest in maintaining the civility that our city is known for. It is our hope and expectation those who attend or are in the area during marches and other events will do their part to maintain a lawful and peaceful assembly. Violence will not be tolerated as we are committed to protecting the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community.
