Eugene Marijuana Tax to Take Effect January 1, 2017

The City’s 3% tax on the retail sales of recreational marijuana items takes effect January 1, 2017. The tax that was approved by voters in the November elections requires marijuana retailers to begin collecting the tax at the point-of-sale for all recreational marijuana items starting in January. City staff are working to finalize Administrative Order No. 44-16-05 prior to the new year to provide clarity on the details of the tax including collection and remittance guidelines, tax payment deadlines, record keeping requirements, customer receipt information, and other tax-related rules for marijuana retailers and consumers. The City’s Finance Division has developed a helpful web page that can be found at http://eugene-or.gov/3451/City-Marijuana-Tax with more information on the City’s Marijuana Tax Program including an FAQ and additional links. Questions regarding the local marijuana tax can be emailed to EugeneMarijuanaTax@ci.eugene.or.us.
