[ARCHIVED] Amazon Pool Reduces Food Waste

Amazon Pool is a community resource with play areas, picnic tables, healthful snack options, and a variety of pools that receive thousands of swimmers every summer. Managing the streams of wrappers, bottles and snacks that arrive with visitors is an ongoing challenge, and one that the facility staff have taken bold steps to reduce.

The pool has added food waste collection bins to the public areas of the facility, and worked with the facility’s on-site food vendor, Ume Grill, to provide compostable food service ware. These changes have significantly reduced the amount of landfill bound waste generated at the site.

Krista Chapman, the Amazon Pool Office Coordinator, says that the feedback from visitors about the pools’ participation in the City of Eugene’s Love Food Not Waste commercial food waste collection program has been positive.
