On January 11 at 11:41 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Dalton Drive for a report of a man who was suicidal and attempting to light a fire inside the home. Officers arrived to find the man, Joshua Nicholas Maskal, age 23, running from the residence. Responding officers were beginning to search for Maskal and a sergeant located him about a block away attempting to hide under a truck. He was cooperative with officers and taken into custody without incident.
Officers at the residence found that his mother, age 45, had been stabbed by Maskal. Maskal had also received a laceration while assaulting his mother. Both Maskal and his mother were transported to a local hospital. The mother’s injuries were non-life-threatening.
Maskal was treated and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of Attempted Murder, Assault in the First Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
