On Wednesday, December 16, our employees walked into the Police building and were greeted by hot coffee and the warm smiles and caring of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, who had set up a day of appreciation for us. Community leaders staffed this event from 5:45 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. In our Department we take great pride in a tradition of caring for our community and treating everyone we encounter respectfully and humanely. Many of our interactions involve people having the worst of days. And, while recent national examinations of policing are putting into place healthy practices for the 21st Century, watching the turmoil leading up to it and what has happened in other communities can leave one with a feeling of isolation in this occupation. On Wednesday, the Chamber's outpouring was not just coffee, but encouragement and a reminder of our community's generosity and connection with us. With genuine appreciation they were a reminder of how critical our work is to the safety of everyone who lives in our community and neighborhoods. As one of the many who is grateful for Wednesday's event, I assure you we are committed and determined to keep Eugene safe and to do so in ways that honor the dignity of all the lives we touch. The Eugene Police Department thanks all of you for your kind and gracious support.
