[ARCHIVED] Officers Issue “Tickets” For Good Deeds

EPD participates in “Operation Chill” issuing good behavior “tickets” for Slurpee® drink coupons. Operation Chill is a national program that has now been in existence for 20 years.

Eugene Police officers participate in the national program as a way to reward positive behavior. Through 7-Eleven’s Operation Chill®, Eugene Police officers “ticket” Slurpee® coupons to individuals that they observe doing something helpful, such as deterring crime or participating in positive activities in the community. During the summer months, officers will issue 1000 free Slurpee coupons.

Since the program’s inception in 1995, more than 14 million Operation Chill coupons have been distributed to hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country in areas where 7-Eleven stores operate. This is the sixth summer that EPD has used the Operation Chill program to reward youth for their good deeds as well as enhance their relations with the young people of Eugene.

“These coupons give EPD officers an added opportunity to connect with the kids in our community in a positive light. The coupons reward good behavior and encourage good citizenship by our kids,” said, Capt. Sam Kamkar. “7-Eleven Operation Chill is a worthy program and we are honored to take part in it.”

Because of the success and popularity of Operation Chill, the program has been extended beyond the summer months to a year-round tool for local law enforcement officers to use during the school year.

This year 7-Eleven reports that more than 1.25 million free Slurpee coupons will be distributed across the country. Those who are “ticketed” by the police will receive coupons good for a free small Slurpee, which can be redeemed at participating stores. The semi-frozen carbonated beverage is a favorite with both young and old. More than a half-million Slurpee’s are purchased each day during the summer at 7-Eleven stores across the country.
