[ARCHIVED] Teralee Death Investigation Update

On July 11, 2015 at 2:36 a.m., Eugene Police responded to a report of a house fire with shots fired at 4785 Teralee Lane. Once the fire was extinguished by the Eugene/Springfield Fire Department, two deceased persons were located inside the residence. The subjects were identified as Heidi Christine Rice (date of birth 04/25/1963) and George Patrick Santos (date of birth 03/17/1961). Rice was a roommate of Santos and there is no information indicating any other kind of relationship.

Subsequent investigation revealed that both subjects died from gunshot wounds. Rice died from multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by Santos while she was in bed. Santos died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Prior to committing suicide, Santos used an accelerant to set the residence on fire.

The investigation revealed that this incident most likely resulted from a dispute between these individuals that occurred earlier in the day when Santos was arrested for Harassment. He was reported to have pushed Rice during an argument over Rice’s relatives and friends not leaving the residence when he told them to leave. Santos was lodged at the Lane County Jail on July 10, 2015 at 7:46 p.m. He was released at 10:34 p.m. on July 10, 2015, after bail was posted.###
