Tuesday, Eugene Police released a video to the media asking for public’s help identifying a burglary suspect. The video shows the suspect entering a room at the top of a flight of stairs in a residence on Sunset Drive, while armed with a large knife in his hand. Later that evening, detectives received a positive identification of the suspect, Richard Aaron Dutra, age 41, of Eugene.
Subsequently, Eugene Police Property Crimes detectives learned of a storage unit that had been rented by Dutra. On April 1, after setting up surveillance, Dutra and his girlfriend, Cynthia Annette Winters, age 40, of Eugene, were observed driving into the storage lot in a stolen motor home. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident.
Detectives served a search warrant on the motor home and storage unit, where property was recovered from the burglary, as well as from a second burglary that had occurred in Springfield. A Springfield Police detective responded to assist with the search warrant and return of some of the stolen property.
Dutra was lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of two counts Burglary in the First Degree, one count of Aggravated Theft in the First Degree, and one count of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. Winters was arrested for one count of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated.
