Driver Attempts to Assault Officer in an Effort to Escape
Case No. 15-4261

A driver who was stopped for expired vehicle registration attempted to assault a Eugene police officer conducting a routine traffic stop. The officer observed Barney Buse, age 62, driving a vehicle with expired registration near W. 1st/Bertelsen at approximately 1:40 pm today. Buse was also believed to be driving with a suspended license.

As the officer was gathering information to cite the driver, Buse stepped out of his vehicle and lunged and swung at the officer. Buse swung a second time but the officer was able to deflect the blow. The officer gave Buse clear commands to and then when that didn't work, deployed his taser to defend himself from further attack. Buse continued to fight as the officer tried to handcuff him and the officer had to use blows to stop the assault and bring Buse under control. Other officers arrived to assist and Buse was handcuffed.

Medics were called to the scene to evaluate Buse for injuries. After transport and evaluation at a local hospital, Buse was cleared to be lodged at the jail on the following charges:

CHARGES: Att. Assault on a Police Officer
Resisting Arrest
Interfering with a Police Officer

Uniform Traffic Citation: DWS- Violation
Expired Registration
