[ARCHIVED] Spencer Butte Trail Project

Spencer Butte

A Public Works project to construct a trail to the summit of Spencer Butte in south Eugene will help people enjoy the panoramic views from the top of the 2,058-foot-high butte while protecting the fragile rocky outcropping ecosystem that is currently being trampled by hikers.

The project is scheduled to begin this spring and be finished this summer. The work includes constructing a stable, 1,460-foot-long,36-inch-wide trail that will endure heavy use for many years to come. The new trail is designed to blend into the natural aesthetic of the butte and will function to protect the natural values of this unique ecosystem. When complete, the trail will include a stable trail bed that will provide a clear route to the top. The trail bed will be composed of gravel and rock with short sections of constructed rock stairs, for a total of about 100 steps made from natural basalt. It will maintain a relatively steep challenging grade with a few widened areas that take advantage of spectacular views.

The project is funded, in part, by a Recreational Trails Program grant provided by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and supplemented with City matching funds. During construction, the upper portion of the main trail will be closed.
