EPD on the Beat December
At 4:48 a.m. on Dec. 22, a 29-year-old man was leaving the Horsehead Tavern at 800 Willamette Street when he reports he was grabbed from behind by an unknown male. Another male approached him from the front and kicked and punched him. The two males got the victim on the ground, then stole his wallet and cell phone. He was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He described the suspect who assaulted him from the front as a black male, in his mid to late 20s, approximately 6’2” tall with a very thin build, and trimmed goatee-style beard. He was last seen wearing a red "hoodie" sweatshirt with the hood up and blue jeans. The victim couldn’t describe the second suspect, who had come from behind. Case Number 14-21914
At 4:53 a.m. on December 21, two males, who appeared to be juveniles, robbed Lee’s Donuts, 1950 Echo Hollow Road, of the tip jar. The suspects were wearing ski masks and all black clothing. They threatened the use of a weapon and left on bikes. Case Number 14-21879
At 8:10 on December 19, officers attempted to take a person who was trespassing at 99 W. Broadway/Olive into custody. Thomas Templeton, age 24, had been trespassing at two different businesses on W Broadway in Eugene. Both of the involved businesses have "No Trespassing" signs posted and Templeton had been contacted several times and advised of trespassing in the same locations. An officer attempted to arrest him and Templeton tried to walk away and it required several officers to take him into custody as he actively resisted. A crowd formed and made derogatory and taunting comments towards the officers. Templeton was arrested for two counts of Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree, Interfering with a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Unlawful Manufacture of Marijuana. Case Number 14-21818
At 2:19 a.m. Saturday, December 20, officers responded to a report of a burglary in the 1700 block of Patterson, at an apartment. The victim had confronted the suspect in his apartment and the suspect fled prior to police arrival. Police were unable to locate him. But, while officers were in contact with the victim of apartment that apartment, the tenants of another apartment rushed over to advise they had just discovered their apartment had also been burglarized. The list of stolen property from that second apartment included a stolen computer. While officers were investigating and taking reports at the scene, one the victims discovered her computer was pinging from an address in the 3200 block of Corally. Officers responded to the cul-de-sac in the 3200 block of Corally and made contact at several residences. Just before officers were about to give up and were making contact at one of the last residences, a vehicle pulled out of the residence next door. Officers stopped the vehicle and located a repeat burglary offender Mark Christopher (Marc) Bryant, age 44, in the passenger seat. When officers mentioned to the driver they were searching for a stolen laptop computer, he quickly pointed towards Bryant and told officers the laptop was in his backpack. There were attempts to locate notices regarding Bryant for Theft 1 and Burglary for crimes unrelated to the burglary on Patterson Street. Bryant was arrested and officers found the stolen computer and other valuable items.
December 20, there was also multiple DUII arrests made, and DUII-related crashes mixed amongst the bevy of activity throughout the night.
On December 20, at 1:12 a.m. a 61-year-old man was crossing the street at W. 5th and Adams, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Ian David Swain, age 28, of Eugene. The victim was transported to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. Swain was arrested for DUII and Assault in the Third Degree. Case Number 14-21834
