EPD on the Beat - February 2014

February 14, 2014

The activity for the night was busy. At one point we had officers tied up on two separate MVA DUII Crashes.  The theme of the night appeared to be disputes, disorderly subjects, suicidal subjects, and a domestic dispute.

DUII MVA, Hit and Run, PCS – Meth
Crescent Ave/ Norkenzie

Arrested: Wolfe, Devin- age 37

Officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash at Green Acres and Norkenzie.  Upon arrival officers observed the vehicle had crashed into a house at the intersection.  The driver fled the scene prior to police arrival and did not attempt to provide his identification or insurance information to the homeowner. A K-9 officer located the suspect (later identified as Wolfe) to the Wal-Mart parking lot on Green Acres.  Wolfe resisted arrest and fought with multiple officers as they attempted to take him into custody.  One officer received minor injuries during the arrest.  A DUII specialist officer responded to assist with the investigation. after Wolfe exhibited behaviors of impairment. Wolfe was lodged for DUII, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, Criminal Mischief 1, Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver, UPCS-Methamphetamine.

DUII MVA (Roll over)
Hwy 99N and Royal Ave

Arrested: Randall, Samuel, age 45

Randall was traveling north on Hwy 99N approaching Royal Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree in the center median which caused the vehicle to roll over on its side.  Randall fled the scene but was captured a short time later.  Randall was cited in lieu of custody for DUII and released.

February 9, 2014
It was a Busy morning for all officers. The evening picked up with officers being continually busy. Many reports and arrests. In the afternoon, it was cold with an odd mist in the air. The main roads were mostly clear but the secondary roads were still quite the mess.
Patrol happened upon a 2001 Acura CL with no plates parked on the corner of Baxter and Elmira. It just so happened that Wayne Alva Bailey, Jr., was in the driver’s seat and a female was in the passenger seat. Bailey wandered off before his wanted status was realized. An officer and his K-9 pal arrived within a few minutes and began checking for Bailey, who was located a couple of houses away, hiding under a bush. In the meantime dispatch located a Springfield call from the day before where the registered owner had called to report the car stolen but the report had yet to be taken. In the end, Bailey went to jail and the happy registered-owner got his car back. Bailey was charged with Unauthorized Use of Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and eight miscellaneous warrants.

A water pipe at 960 Olive St (Eugene Police Downtown Substation) burst. Three inches of water were reported to be in the report writing area. LCC handled the clean-up.
An ODOT snow plow overturned on I-105 near the Delta off ramp. The highway going westbound was shut down for a few hours while the truck was righted and the driver transported to a local hospital.

At 1:53 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, a white male entered the Rite Aid at 1560 Coburg Road, and made contact with the pharmacist. He robbed the store of prescription medicine using a note and threatening a weapon. The subject left on foot, then in a vehicle southboundon Coburg Rd. Due to time lapse no suspect was located. The suspect is described as a tall, slender, white male, 6’1” tall and 190 pounds, in his 20s, clean shaven and missing teeth. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and white shoes. He was also wearing a black baseball hat.

February 8, 2014
The day was busy with weather and traffic-related calls. At one point the majority of calls on the screen were power lines down and trees down. The major arterial roads were mostly clear, while the secondary roads are still very slick with ice and down trees.

February 6, 2014

Niccole Lavanda Hedberg, age 42, was the driver in a single vehicle roll-over crash that happened shortly after midnight. The crash occurred near the on-ramp from eastbound Fourth Avenue, and northbound Coburg Road. Hedberg failed to negotiate the curve and collided with the cement barrier in front of the old EWEB building. The vehicle was found on its side, on the east side of the cement barrier. Hedberg was cited in lieu of custody for DUII.

February 4, 2014

Early this morning an officer was in the Wetlands parking lot looking for a vehicle involved in an unrelated Theft when a newer Chevy Impala drew his interest. The vehicle, which happened to be a stolen vehicle, quickly parked and three occupants departed at a brisk pace and then ran. The officer sent out information about the description and direction that the occupants were traveling, and the driver, Nathan Lamar Pierce, age 44, was located a few blocks away by the original officer and a K9 officer. He was arrested for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and Possession of Meth.

February 3, 2014

Monday evening, an officer took a report regarding a tip-jar theft at the Blind Pig. Witnesses gave the officer the license plate and description of the suspect, Corinth Christopher Lane, age 24, and mentioned that he might be armed. After watching for the vehicle throughout the night, the officer eventually spotted it leaving Quaker Street. The officer and another officer approached Lane, who was not compliant at first, but eventually got out of the car, and was taken into custody for Theft 3, shortly after midnight, Tuesday, February 4.

February  1, 2014

An officer attempted to stop Patrick Heath Bishop, age 38, in the area of Wellington and Wood shortly before midnight Saturday, but when Bishop eluded police, the pursuit was terminated. Several officers in the area were able to catch a glimpse of Bishop as he continued to drive recklessly southbound on Highway 99, and then eastbound on 7th Avenue. One officer spotted Bishop from a distance as he turned into the fairgrounds entrance at 13th Avenue and Jefferson. The officer saw this as an opportunity to potentially apprehend Bishop and continued watching him from his position on 13th Avenue. Bishop parked the car and attempted to flee south on foot but was quickly caught by the police K-9, which held Bishop in place until officers arrived to take him into custody. Medics transported Bishop to the University District Hospital before he was taken to jail and arrested for Eluding (Vehicle), Eluding (Foot), Reckless Driving, DUII (C/S), and Possession of Cocaine.

It was a busy night with fights, domestic disputes and crashes. Officer’s did a great job handling a large amount of calls and assisting outside agencies. Priority calls only for a portion of the night and two in on overtime. Incidents to note:

Officers were called to the area of 1300 Jacobs Dr. regarding two unknown males with flashlights in a home's back yard and prowling around the neighborhood. Ofc. Bremer stopped Seth Lee Mauro, age 44, who matched a description given near 1170 HWY 99N. Mauro had multiple warrants and was charged with Criminal Trespass II, Providing False Information to Police. The other male is outstanding.

Officer’s responded to 894 E. 13th Ave. Taylor’s Bar, regarding a disorderly subject being detained in handcuffs by security. Upon arrival, Trevor Lee Remington, age 27, became more agitated and disorderly. Officers on scene tried to get Remington to a patrol vehicle as a large crowd was beginning to form, due to Remington’s loud yelling and overall disorderly behavior. Remington continued to fight and kick at officers while being taken into custody and placed in a patrol vehicle. Remington continued to fight at the Jail, injuring a deputy. He was charged with Criminal Trespass II, Disorderly Conduct II, Resisting Arrest, and two counts of Assaulting a Public Safety Officer.

At 1:11 a.m. February 1, officers responded to 62 W. Broadway, Cowfish bar and club regarding an unknown male who assaulted a 22-year-old male, out front. The unknown male approached the victim, making and then yelling derogatory statements regarding his sexual orientation. The suspect next grabbed the victim and threw him to the ground while continuing to make negative statements about his sexual orientation. The victim tried to stand up but the suspect picked him up and threw him back to the ground and punched him. Another male nearby tried to intervene and got hit several times by a second suspect. The suspects were last seen walking away west bound. Follow-up is pending regarding the evidence. One suspect is an unknown white male with dark colored hoodie, the other a white male in a grey beanie.  The victim declined medics.

Day shift recovered three stolen vehicles in the areas of 1040 Green Acres with the help of EPD Crime Prevention Unit.  Later in the day, there was a burglary on Balboa and the suspects were last seen fairly close to the Walmart at 1040 Green Acres.  The two aren’t related that we know of but show some criminal activity in the area.
