Weekly Recap - September 22, 2017

Posted on September 22, 2017 at 2:50 PM by Elena Domingo

The banner headline this week is the Council’s conversation about renaming Broadway Plaza as Kesey Square.  There are two decisions for Council based on motions they passed in April.  The first is a renaming of the space.  The second is consideration of changing the zoning of the square from commercial use into a park.  The issues have been conflated – with some concern among downtown businesses that renaming the square would put us directly on a path to rezoning.  This is not the case.  Renaming does not commit us to rezoning.

Council directed me to form a Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee to review the naming options and make a recommendation. The first choice will be whether to name it Kesey; if not, the committee may submit other names in addition to Broadway Plaza. I am to return to Council with this recommendation in 45 days.

I have asked councilors by Monday to each submit the name of a constituent, or their own, to serve on this committee to ensure that all of the wards are represented in the decision. If you are interested in serving, please let your councilor know this weekend.
