A few highlights from the week:
Downtown safety: Wednesday’s Council work session reviewed both law enforcement data and the array of programs the City has implemented to make the area more inviting and safe. Council referred two possible ordinances to a public hearing on February 27th at 7:30 pm.
- A ban of dogs in a defined area of downtown modeled on a dog ban that has been in place on 13th Ave. near the University. People who live and work downtown or need to walk through to an adjacent area are exempt from the ban.
- A smoking ban that extends the existing smoking restrictions to encompass sidewalks and alleys. Businesses would have the ability to opt-out. This is primarily a public health ordinance aimed at reducing exposure to second-hand smoke.
I want to extend thanks and appreciation to the 100 or so people who turned out for a meeting in the Whitaker neighborhood on Wednesday - in response to hateful graffiti that was spray-painted in multiple locations last weekend. Their commitment to creating safety and acceptance was inspiring and encouraging.
