2023 Mayor's Art Show Jurors
Janine Etherington
Janine Etherington was born in Calgary, Canada. She attended the Alberta College of Art and graduated from Emily Carr University in Vancouver, British Columbia where she earned honors in painting and printmaking. Most recently she completed a three-month intensive that included Art2Life with Nicholas Wilton, The Language of Color and The Language of Design with Mark Eanes and Drawing Is Everything with Sara Post. Janine’s work spans a variety of media, including painting (oil, acrylic, and mixed media), printmaking, photography and assemblage.
Perspective, relationship and trompe l’oeil fuel Janine’s curiosity and drive her work. An ongoing interaction between an arrangement of wood elements and angles of light fuels a cycle of invention and reinvention. This process inspires a dialogue about how the elements relate, what surprising connections might be made and what assumptions might be challenged and upended. The evolution of this dialogue draws her in and entices her to keep looking.
Janine has been in the Mayor’s Art Show and the Eugene Biennial 11 times since 2010, winning the MAS Curator’s Choice Award in 2022 and the Jerry Freeman Award in 2016. She has exhibited at galleries in Western Canada, the Western United States and around the New York metropolitan area, as well as in various international juried shows. Her work can be found in private and public collections in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. She has been featured in “Event: Journal of Contemporary Arts."
Janine has lived and worked in Eugene, Oregon since 1994.
Shayleen Eaglespeaker
Shayleen Macy EagleSpeaker (Wasco/Warm Springs) is a lifelong artist who specializes in traditional Native American arts of the Columbia River Plateau. Shayleen received her BFA in 2014 at the University of Oregon in printmaking and is currently a PhD student in linguistics at the University of Oregon studying the Kiksht and Ichishkiin languages, which are indigenous to the Columbia River regions of Oregon and Washington. Shayleen’s other areas of interest include tribal salmon fishing and processing, community development and business. Through her work, her focuses are on cultural preservation and entrepreneurship.
Timothy Herrera
Timothy Herrera is currently working as a faculty member at the University of Oregon and has previous experience as a program coordinator for the Oregon Folklife Network (OFN) and Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad (formally known as Centro Latino Americano). At OFN, Timothy helped execute the 2022 Oregon Culture Night Series, coordinate the 2023 Traditional Art and Apprentice Program and conduct a bilingual interview for the culture keeper roster and statewide survey. With Plaza de Nuestra Comunidad, he helped coordinate cultural events, educational workshops, adult English classes, the community garden program and youth programming.
Timothy is currently serving as an advisory committee member for the Cultural Currents collaborative effort with the Lane Arts Council and the City of Eugene Cultural Services, a board member for the Center of Latino and Latin American Studies (CLLAS, and a current member of the Oregon Water Justice Initiative. He graduated with a PhD in cultural anthropology at the University of Oregon. In addition to bringing deep skills for working reciprocally with communities, he is a Spanish speaker and in his multiple roles helps with bilingual outreach and translation services. Timothy has expressed that he is grateful for having many opportunities to serve the diverse communities of Oregon, to collaborate with the state’s artists and to support their work and tradition, to use ethnographic skills for public programming purposes and to foster accessibility with Oregon’s vast Spanish-speaking communities.
