Artist Bio
Uyen-thi Nguyen works primarily in oils. In 2020, she received an individual arts grant from Lane Arts Council as well as a Juror's Choice Award for her painting "At the End" at The Arts Center in Corvallis. She was awarded Moorpark College's Printmaking Award, a Fine Arts Award from the Simi Valley Art Association and received scholarships to Art Center of Pasadena and the Academy of Art San Francisco, where she studied for a time. Her latest solo show, "Garden of People, A Portrait of Cottage Grove," has been on display in Eugene during Visual Arts Week and in historic downtown Cottage Grove alongside Bohemia Mining Days. Since 2018, she has exhibited work at over multiple art centers, venues and galleries, including the Radius Annex Gallery and Splendorporium in Portland, Cultural Center of Cape Cod and other locations in Oregon and across the United States. Her love of community led her to coordinate youth arts programs at Emerald Art Center in Springfield, teach arts enrichment at Opal Center for Arts and Education and Delight in Cottage Grove and serve on both the Springfield Arts Commission and Cottage Grove Artwalk. She is a member of New Zone Gallery, Plein Air painters of Lane County and Eugene Figurative Arts group. Figure drawing, a joy in itself, is at the heart of her practice.
Artist Statement
What does it feel like? In my best days, I remember to ask this question and listen for an answer. All things feel alive. This is my work. To look, to love, to learn what it is to see with eyes unburdened by preconceptions. To find the relationships that are interlaced between, within and around each of us. Sometimes the exploration reveals dark places, sometimes I simply bask in the ten thousand pretty things. I paint to express the inner world within exterior avatars, our human condition, the beauty and life around me.
