Ice and Snow Preparation
Maintaining city streets during winter storm conditions is the responsibility of the Public Works Maintenance Division. The Public Works Ice / Snow Emergency Plan is designed to keep the major thoroughfares of the transportation systems operational and safe during ice and snow events.
Winter storms can cause significant economic impacts on the community depending on the intensity and duration of the storm. During winter events, our goal is to minimize economic and environmental impacts on the community and to provide the prudent motorist with a reasonably safe traveling surface. The Maintenance Division maintains approximately 1300 lane miles of streets, 600 of which are priority ice/snow routes. Only for the purpose of emergency response will streets not identified as priority ice/snow routes be maintained during ice/snow operations.
Not all city streets receive service during winter events. Ice and snow routes have been established and prioritized into three route categories. Routes are grouped by geographical area. The main emphasis will be on priorities 1 and 2, which largely include arterial and a select group of collector streets. Also, police and fire requests, primary streets to hospital, school and LTD snow routes are among some of the top priorities in the Ice/Snow Emergency Plan:
