Getting Around Safely
Getting Around Safely Transportation in Eugene includes a variety of travel choices: motor vehicles, bicycles, walking, and transit. All transportation users are responsible for ensuring their safety and the safety of others around them. Obeying posted speed limits, stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks, and obeying all traffic controls, such as stop signs, prevents user conflicts and keeps the system working smoothly. To ensure the safety of all users, the City of Eugene relies on a variety of traffic safety devices and educational programs. This page links to resources and tools that all transportation system users should know and understand to help everyone get around safely.
What is it? A bike box is a bicycle staging area located at an intersection. It is designed to prevent bicycle/car collisions, especially those between drivers turning and bicyclists going straight.
Why are bike boxes used?
To prevent collisions between turning motorists and bicyclists going straight.
To allow bicyclists to get into the proper lane position for turning movements or to continue straight in alignment with bike facilities (sharrow or bike lane).
Bike Boxes improve conditions for both bicyclists and motorists at intersections by: — increasing the visibility of bicyclists — creating separate spaces for bicyclists and motorists.
