How will you have fun this summer? The Summer Rec guide has a kajillion ideas!
The 2012 Summer Recreation Guide is now available and, at 96 pages, it’s just bursting with fun, including more than 100 summer camps for ages 3-18.
The Guide is a catalog of activities, events, classes and programs offered by City of Eugene Recreation Services from June 1 – August 31. Its listings are for families, children, youth, teens, adults, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
Community events in the Guide include the We Are Bethel Celebration, Whiteaker Neighborhood River Festival, a Summer Block Party at Echo Hollow Pool, and the Let’s Move Eugene event at Amazon Pool.
Activities for children, youth and teens include rafting and sailing, skateboard competitions, tree climbing, archery, swim lessons and a wide variety of summer camps. For adults, listings include team sports, land and water fitness classes, regional excursions for seniors, and presentations on an assortment of topics.
Attendance is free for many activities in the Guide, including the summer playground program, Fun For All, that will operate five days a week, July 2-August 24, in eight area parks, many with free lunches.
Registration is now open for most activities and summer camps that run from June 25–August 31. Most camps are offered by the week for part or all day. Some extended care is available.
For more information about City of Eugene Recreation programs offered this summer, go to www.eugene-or.gov/recenroll or call 541-682-5333.

Rec eNews Tip: Six tips for making your child's camping experience a success:
1. Give your child some space. On the first day of camp, take your child to her destination, assist her in settling in, and then leave. Lingering parents create lingering feelings of doubt. The sooner you leave, the sooner your child can establish her camp as a home away from home.
2. Be curious. Get to know the staff. Find out when are the best times to check in about your child’s day.
3. Accentuate the positive. To frame your child’s attitude in a positive way, use these conversation starters: Tell me three good things that happened today. What was the best thing about your day? Tell me about all of the interesting kids and instructors you met today.
4. Be informative. If your child has difficult times with transitions or losing in games; let the camp staff know. Help them to find creative ways to help your child have a positive and fun experience
5. Discover new interests. If your child plays sports or does dance throughout the school year, why not explore other opportunities in the summer months? Maybe your son has a knack for science that he'd like to investigate beyond the classroom. Perhaps your daughter has an interest in nature she'd like to explore.
6. Use the buddy system. Inquire if other parents (neighbors, parents of your child's friends) would be interested in having their child participate in the same camp. Having a friend take part in the camp can make the adjustment easier, and parents can work out a carpooling schedule.
