Ambulance Funding

Ambulance Funding: Matching Resources to Needs

The central Lane County area’s ambulance transport system continues to experience a financial crisis attributed largely to the federal government’s decline in Medicare and Medicaid payments. Additionally, more and more patients are uninsured or underinsured. At the same time, the system continues to experience an increase in utilization of services. This situation has been further exacerbated by the global economic recession and all three regional providers (Eugene Fire & EMS, Springfield Fire & Life Safety, and Lane Rural Fire/Rescue) are experiencing severe challenges in operating a high-quality emergency medical services system. To learn more about the problem and potential solutions, watch the Ambulance Funding: Matching Resources to Needs video and hear what solutions officials are considering.

ANNOUNCING THE SECOND ANNUAL YOUNG WOMEN'S FIRE CAMP!

Do you know an energetic young woman who is interested in learning more about the fire service?

The Eugene Fire & EMS and Springfield Fire & Life Safety Departments are hosting the second annual Young Women’s Fire Camp.  The camp is being held from July 9, 2012 – July 13, 2012 at the Emergency Services Training Center at 2nd & Chambers in Eugene.  This is a free day camp for high school age young women (up to age 19), designed as a “mini” fire academy with a focus on teamwork and building confidence and leadership skills.  Activities will include rope rappelling, vehicle extrication, forcible entry, live firefighting and emergency medical response scenarios.  Each day, there will be female leaders from the community speaking with the camp participants at lunchtime.  Last year’s camp was very successful, and everyone involved had a lot of fun. Please help us get the word out to the young women in our community about this unique opportunity.

The application process will open on Monday April 2nd, 2012 and close on Friday May 4, 2012.  To apply, print and complete an application and submit it to:

Are you interested in a career in the fire service?
Here are some things you should do:

1.  Work toward EMT certification.  For employment with Eugene Fire & EMS, certification at the Intermediate or Paramedic level is required, in addition to a high school diploma or equivalent.  EMT classes are offered at Lane Community College in Eugene and Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

2.  Volunteer.  Many career firefighters got their early experience by volunteering with a rural fire protection district.  This gave them an advantage in the competitive hiring process.  Eugene and Springfield are surrounded by fire protection districts that rely on volunteers to provide a response in their service area.  Contact one near you.

3.  Register for notification.  The City of Eugene maintains a notification list for individuals interested in specific positions.  To register to be notified when there is a vacancy matching your interests, click here

4.  Find out more.  For additional information, click on "Employment" above and to your left.  Or you can go directly to our most recent firefighter recruitment brochure.

 Fire Department Merger:
Your Opinion Counts!

The Eugene Fire & EMS Department and the Springfield Fire & Life Safety Department are currently undergoing a consolidation of some administrative and support functions as a way to save taxpayer costs and provide more efficient service.  Emergency response, which is already substantially merged, will not change.  We are merging the Office of the Chief, Training Section, Fire Marshal's Office, and Ambulance Billing Section.  If these steps prove successful, a complete merger of the two departments will follow.

Your elected officials on the Eugene City Council, as well as Fire & EMS administrators, are interested in your opinion on this matter.  If you have any questions or comments regarding the consolidation, we invite you to e-mail firedept@ci.eugene.or.us or to contact us at 541-682-7118.

A merger of two or more fire departments is not unprecedented.  They may take various forms.  The cities of Livermore and Pleasanton, Calif., have combined their fire departments under a Joint Powers Authority.  Check out that department's website and annual report.  Meanwhile, two successful examples of merged fire departments in Oregon are Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (www.tvfr.com) and Clackamas Fire District #1 (www.clackamasfire.com).
