The Eugene Police Department’s Forensic Evidence Unit (FEU) employs three full-time civilian forensic analysts, one forensic technician, a unit supervisor, and has multiple volunteers.
Forensic analysis is a job description made famous in recent years by popular television programs. At EPD forensic analysts’ work includes crime scene processing and reconstruction, bloodstain pattern interpretation, latent fingerprint processing and comparison, video analysis and digital imaging, serial number restoration, bone identification, photography assistance, and more; forensic analysts also must regularly testify in court about their work. In accordance with national standards, forensic analysts who work for EPD undergo annual proficiency testing.
The Eugene Police Department has a well-equipped forensics lab and highly trained personnel, able to conduct most forensics work needed by the department, but evidence requiring controlled substance analysis, ballistics testing or DNA analysis must be sent to outside agencies. Conversely, EPD analysts are able to help investigators at other agencies by performing some forensics work those agencies cannot do themselves.
