Mission Statement
The Eugene Public Library supports an informed community, lifelong learning and the love of reading by providing access for all city residents to the universe of ideas and information.
The Eugene Public Library system serves the 150,000 residents of Eugene, Oregon, the state's second-largest city. The Library's collection comprises over 400,000 items in a variety of formats, including videos, compact discs, DVDs, and audio books. Indexes provide subject access to the Library's 600 magazine and 55 newspaper subscriptions. Special indexes to business and health information are available at the library, including the The New York Times online. The Oregonian and the Register-Guard index are available in the Library and online.
Programming to children, and preschool children in particular, is a major service emphasis. EPL also refers patrons to local organizations and institutions that offer group and one-on-one tutoring in basic literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) and classes in Adult Basic Skills such as reading, writing and math.
The Library provides access to patrons via the Internet for those who wish to search the online catalog, full-text databases, and indexes. Patrons may also place reserves, renew items, or browse their own record of items on loan.
The Library provides full reference services to both adults and children. The Library bases its service on the philosophies stated in the American Library Association's Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement.
