 Recruit Class 12 Graduates
When the department's single-role medic service was discontinued, the EMTs in that program -- all females -- were given the opportunity to become firefighters.  The nation's first all-female class of recruits recently graduated and are now working on the line.

AMBULANCE SERVICE:
WHAT'S THE FUTURE?

With Medicare reimbursements drastically reduced, and with eco-nomic conditions faltering, ambulance services are no longer able to balance their budget.  A task force of elected officials in our region is developing a recommendation on how the service should be funded in the future.  Follow their proceedings here.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:
JOIN US FOR
CAREER DAY!

If you've ever wanted to know more about being a firefighter or paramedic, and what it takes to become one, sign up to partici-pate in a Eugene Fire & EMS Department career day.  The
next one is scheduled for fall 2010.

On career day, students have an opportunity to learn what the job of a firefighter/paramedic is really like, and what steps it takes to get there.  The all-day session includes information from fire agency, college, and related organizations about preparing for a fire service career, and about the rewards and responsibilities of the job.  Career day also includes hands-on activities involving a live burn, fire engines, medical equipment, and response drills.

To get on the notification list for High School Career Day, simply e-mail Cinimint Harper at the Fire & EMS Department, cinimint.k.harper@ci.eugene.or.us, and give your name, age, name of high school, year in high school, and your contact information.  You can also sign up by phone by calling 541-682-7120.  In order to complete the sign-up, all participants must have a parent permission form signed and brought with them the day of the event.

Are you interested in a career in the fire service?
Here are some things you should do:

1.  Work toward EMT certification.  For employment with Eugene Fire & EMS, certification at the Intermediate or Paramedic level is required, in addition to a high school diploma or equivalent.  EMT classes are offered at Lane Community College in Eugene and Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

2.  Volunteer.  Many career firefighters got their early experience by volunteering with a rural fire protection district.  This gave them an advantage in the competitive hiring process.  Eugene and Springfield are surrounded by fire protection districts that rely on volunteers to provide a response in their service area.  Contact one near you.

3.  Register for notification.  The City of Eugene maintains a notification list for individuals interested in specific positions.  To register to be notified when there is a vacancy matching your interests, click here

4.  Find out more.  For additional information, click on "Employment" above and to your left.  Or you can go directly to our most recent firefighter recruitment brochure.

 Fire Department Merger:
Your Opinion Counts!

The Eugene Fire & EMS Department and the Springfield Fire & Life Safety Department are currently undergoing a consoli-dation of some administrative and support functions as a way to save taxpayer costs and provide more efficient service.  Emergency response, which is already substantially merged, will not change.  We are merging the Office of the Chief, Training Section, Fire Marshal's Office, and Ambulance Billing Section.  If these steps prove successful, a complete merger of the two departments will follow.

Your elected officials on the Eugene City Council, as well as Fire & EMS administrators, are interested in your opinion on this matter.  If you have any questions or comments regarding the consolidation, we invite you to e-mail firedept@ci.eugene.or.us or to contact us at 541-682-7118.

A merger of two or more fire departments is not unprecedented.  They may take various forms.  The cities of Livermore and Pleasanton, Calif., have combined their fire departments under a Joint Powers Authority.  Check out that department's website and annual report.  Meanwhile, two successful examples of merged fire departments in Oregon are Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (www.tvfr.com) and Clackamas Fire District #1 (www.clackamasfire.com).
