Eugene to Apply for Google Fiber Pilot Project
Google is planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial communities across the nation. Google intends to deliver Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, up to 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today. The system will use fiber-to-the-home technology to serve as a test bed for “next generation” Internet services. Google states that the service will be competitively priced. The company is accepting applications, via responding to an RFI (Request for Information), from communities of 50,000 to 500,000 populations.
The RFI is due on March 26, 2010. The RFI covers a broad set of areas including community demographics, terrain, regulatory issues, permitting, construction methods, current Internet providers, and community interest.
Eugene will be submitting an RFI response. Google is also interested in the level of community interest. There are two ways to demonstrate your interest and support of Eugene’s RFI response. First, take the poll on this page – we’ll report the results to Google. Second, submit a “Community Nomination” from the Google web site. These “Community Nominations” will complement the official RFI response from the City of Eugene.
Questions or comments about the RFI response should be directed to Randy Kolb, Information Services Director, at randy.c.kolb@ci.eugene.or.us.
