2009 Amazon Path Repair Project

Construction Schedule
The Amazon Path Rehabilitation project was completed on October 16, 2009. Construction began in late June, 2009.
What Kind of Work Was Done?
The project rehabilitated Amazon Path from 19th to 31st avenues. The 40-year-old path was built in the 1970s on an unstable, expansive-clay subsurface. This means the ground underneath the path expands during the winter when the ground is wet and then contracts when the ground dries out in the summer. As a result, the path had developed numerous cracks and sunken and heaved concrete and asphalt panels, creating potential hazards for path users.
How Was the Project Funded and Selected?
Eugene voters approved a five-year general obligation (property tax) bond measure to fix city streets and local bike path in November 2008. The bond measure is designed to fix approximately 70 lane miles of streets and three miles of off-street bike and pedestrian paths.
Using a pavement evaluation system and path usage data, Public Works Engineering staff developed a list of needed path repairs around the city. Staff then presented the evaluation results to the Eugene Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). Members of Eugene’s BPAC supported the staff evaluation and helped to prioritize the path repairs list. The Amazon shared-use path was selected for rehabilitation during the 2009 construction season based on usage and condition. Future path repair and rehabilitation projects will be selected based on the BPAC-approved priority list.
