Agate/Fairmount Study

The Agate Street/Fairmount Neighborhood Traffic Study will address options for improving traffic operations on Agate Street as well as cut-through traffic in the Fairmount Neighborhood. Possible methods of addressing these issues include traffic calming measures in the surrounding neighborhood and pedestrian improvements at the 14th and Agate pedestrian crossing.

In 2003, the University of Oregon East Campus Planning process concluded that a traffic study be conducted in the Fairmount area. The Eugene City Council directed City staff to initiate a study of Agate Street and the adjacent Fairmount Neighborhood to identify strategies improving the functionality of Agate Street as a minor arterial while also reducing cut-through traffic in the Fairmount Neighborhood.

The study area is bounded by Franklin Boulevard to the North, Fairmount Boulevard to the East, 19th Street to the South, and Agate Street to the West. The Agate Street/Fairmount Traffic Study consists of five tasks that will be completed by City staff and DKS Associates, a transportation planning and engineering consulting firm. Tasks include:

1. Data Collection & Study of Existing Conditions
2. Scenario Development (2015 analysis year)
3. Future Forecasting
4. Future Conditions Analysis & Mitigation
5. Draft & Final Report

A substantial public involvement component is included in the study. This component will be guided by a public involvement plan developed with Fairmount Neighborhood leaders and University of Oregon planning staff. Residents and other stakeholders will be invited to participate in meetings and workshops to develop and review potential scenarios and conceptual designs for the study area.
