Quiet Zone Eugene Priority

Eugene has made it a priority to establish a train horn quiet zone in the downtown area

City Council Sets Quiet Zone as Community Priority
City Council Sets Quiet Zone as Community Priority

On February 25, 2008, the Eugene City Council unanimously voted to make it a City priority to have a downtown railroad quiet zone established.  In setting this priority, the council cited three reasons: safety, economic development, and neighborhood livability. The council also clearly stated that it would not support closing half (five of the 10) at-grade rail crossings in the downtown area. This position mirrors the community sentiment expressed in a series of public meetings during the fall of 2007.  Instead, the council favored a combination of supplemental safety measures (SSMs), with particular interest in “quad gates” because of their effectiveness in increasing safety (click fact sheet link on right for more details on quad gates).

Staff received a great amount of information through a series of public meetings held earlier this fall, and we want to thank all those who have participated in the process. If you have any questions, please contact David Roth at David.F.Roth@ci.eugene.or.us or 541-682-5727.
