Native Plant Nursery
Volunteers with the Stream Team program grow and tend native plants at the Native Plant Nursery in Alton Baker Park. Operated by City staff and Stream Team volunteers, the nursery produces hard-to-find native seed and plant material for use in enhancing native habitats within City of Eugene parks and natural areas. In addition to enhancing the diversity of the City’s natural areas the nursery provides an opportunity to educate the community about native plants by involving them in day-to-day operations and by engaging them in projects to plant out nursery-grown plant material. The nursery facility consists of three shade houses for potted plant material, 37 permanent beds for growing out seed, seed cleaning and storage facilities, and an automated irrigation system. Most prevalent on this site is the enthusiasm and dedication of the “regulars” who volunteer each Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. It is a great way to learn about native plants while improving the quality of life in Eugene. No experience or prior knowledge is required to volunteer at the nursery.
Stream Team volunteers plant most of the vegetation out at sites that have been adopted by neighborhoods, businesses, agencies, churches, and community service groups. For more information on how to get involved with planting projects see the habitat enhancement page.
