It's the first! It's fun! It's high flying! It's the Eugene Flying Disc Festival!

Flying Disc DogCome on over to Westmoreland Community Park, 22nd & Polk St., on Saturday, August 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., to watch and/or compete in the first Eugene Flying Disc Festival. Presented by the City’s Athletics Program, the festival provides opportunities for youth, adults and canines to compete in an all-around competition.

 

There will be four all-around events: distance, accuracy, disc golf and maximum time aloft, in three divisions: boys/girls; men/women; and seniors (age 55+). Canine competitors will be judged on distance/accuracy (toss and fetch). The cost for early registration is $10 youth, $15 adults, and $10 canine. Add $5 if registering after August 6.
           

Competitors in the all around events must check-in at 9 a.m.; with events starting at 10 a.m. At approximately 1 p.m., there will be demonstrations, skills clinics and lunch provided to registered competitors. Check in for canines is at 2 p.m. with competition beginning at 3 p.m.

Waterfest pictureWaterfest 2010 Makes the Water Accessible to All

This one-day workshop on adaptive water sports gives people with physical disabilities the opportunity to try adapted waterskiing, kayaking, sailing on Quadzilla (a 25-foot Santana race board set up for wheelchair users), swimming, fishing and tubing.

 

It all happens at Richardson Park on Fern Ridge Reservoir August 14, 8a.m. – 4 p.m. Cost is $25 and includes a BBQ lunch. Preregistration is required. For more information or to register, call 541-682-5311. 

 

 
Fall Recreation Guide Cover

Rec eNews Tip: Fall Registration is Now Open Online

Rec Guides will be arriving in Eugene mailboxes mid-month, but you can register for most classes online now!

 

This fall’s guide cover features two ceramics instructors, representing dozens of arts classes and events offered from September – December for all ages, including: ceramics, dancing and dances, music lessons and performances, singing, drawing, jewelry-making, trips to a museum and theater, textile arts, card-making, painting, photography, cultural explorations, movies, and creative writing.

Oh! Those Lazy Days of Summer in the City!
Get out the blanket or lawn chairs, pack a picnic dinner and come on downtown or to a local park for a family fun!  Every Wednesday night, head on downtown for family fun events. Former “Movie Nights” or “Concerts” in the Park, these events are now part of the Summer in the City Programming. Watch for Breakfast on the Bridges and Skate competitions, too.

Summer in the City – Downtown

It’s fun for everyone each Wednesday at 6 p.m., at the Broadway Plaza, downtown. All entertainment is free with a suggested donation of a can of food for the Relief Nursery.

 

At every Downtown event, Eugene Police Crime Prevention Experts will be on hand with the latest tips and programs for you and your family. Also, Let your creativity flow at M.E.C.C.A’s imagination station! Create your own themed art projects: stickers, hats out of paper bags, headbands, masks, shoe art, face painting and much more!

 Circus! Circus!

o    August 4, come to Circus! Circus! A Fun Family Circus Night. You’ll be dazzled by this circus on the street! It’s pure entertainment and an opportunity to try your hand at circus arts. Performances by: National Gymnastics Academy, Meadowlark Elementary, The Amazing Spaghetti, Eastgate Kenpo Karate, Invincible Vince’s Magic, Girl Circus, Magician Hart Keene, Juggler Fred Roellig, and Fire Dancing by Dragontribe.

 

o    August 11, it’s Open Studio on Broadway. Where ou can watch and be the artist! The arts come alive on the downtown streets. In the perfect mixture of arts and outdoors, you’ll see artists at work and they’ll help you make your own art with live background music. Explore your inner artist and be exposed to what Eugene has to offer.

 

o    August 18, see Runway Masquerade. Back by popular demand, Eugene’s fashion artists shine bright at this fantastic event starting at approximately 8:30 p.m. This show of Eugene’s fashion scene on the runway, along with the vendor booths, brings out the best in Broadway Plaza! This exciting event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. with top notch stylists creating master works of art with hair!

 

o    August 25, KOOL 99.1 presents: Dance Party & Theatre Teaser. Dance the night away with KOOL 99.1 DJ Barry McGuire! An evening of dancing and singing along to every song! At 6:00 pm, the evening starts off with short local theatre performances, including Lord Leebrick Theatre Company and Fred Crafts’ Radio REDUX. See for yourself what Eugene’s theatre community has to offer!

 

Summer in the City - Movies

All movies begin at dusk, about 9 p.m. Here’s the August line-up:

o    August 6, Mirrormask* (PG, 101 minutes) in Monroe Park, W. 10th & Monroe.

o    August 7, Shark Tale (PG, 90 minutes) will be shown with Spanish subtitles at Bethel Community Park, along Legacy Street.

o    August 13, Back to the Future (PG, 116 minutes) with Spanish subtitles, at Trainsong Park, Bell Ave., off Bethel Dr.

o    August 20, Secret Garden (G, 101 minutes), at State Street Park, Burnett & Dakota

o    August 21, The Goonies* (PG, 114 minutes) at University Park, 24th & University.

o    August 27, Una Película de Huevos (G, 90 minutes) shown in Spanish, with English subtitles, at Petersen Barn Center, 870 Berntzen Road.

 

*Northwest Community Credit Union provides free treats with their human-powered smoothie maker at this movie.

 

Summer in the City – Live Music

Music will be in the air in City parks this month with several free concerts (formerly called Concerts in the Park).

 

o    Every Sunday evening, at 6:30, come to Washburne Park, Agate & 20th for a free concert. Here’s who’s playing in August:

August 1, Springfield Concert Band: pops, show tunes, marches & more.

August 8, Oregon Tuba Ensemble:familiar tunes and classical melodies performed entirely on tubas.

August 15, Oregon Brass society plays music of a genuine British-style brass band.

August 22, Eugene Symphonic Band: traditional concert band repertoire including pops, marches & more.

August 29, Junction City Polka Band: grab a partner and dance to the polka.

 

o    Thursday, August 12, 6:30 p.m., the band, Taste, plays at Maurie Jacobs Park. Come to this concert along the river and enjoy this Eugene cover band’s funky, sweet and smooth, guitar-driven R&B music.

 

Summer in the City – Skate Competitions

The End of Summer Skate Competition will be held on Saturday, August 28, 5 p.m., at Willamalane Skatepark in Springfield. All ages, all abilities! Register at 4 p.m., $3 for competitors; free for observers. Parent must register youth 18 and under.  Come see some great skating or compete yourself! They’ll be hot dogs, prizes and music. Helmets for riders required at all times. 100% of proceeds will go to Skaters for Eugene Skateparks (www.skateeugene.org) to fund the Washington-Jefferson Skate Park. Breakfast at the Bike Bridges 

August 27, 7 – 9:30 a.m. Amazon Trail and 24th Ave., celebrate biking and walking with coffee, bagels, safety checks, minor bike tune-ups and free bike bell installation.

Block Party


End of Summer Block Party
You and your family are invited to the block party of the year! The End of Summer Block Party is complete with neighbors, good times, games, food and great ice cream. This is a party you and your family don't want to miss! It’s Saturday, August 28, 1-3 p.m. at Campbell Center, 155 High St. And best of all, it’s free! 541-682-5311 for information.

 


Fun For All web linkIt's Fun for All!
Eugene Recreation’s free summer playground program, Fun For All, continues in your neighborhood. This community-wide program provides free recreation opportunities for youth ages 7 and older (under 7 years, when accompanied by someone 15 years or older). Food For Lane County provides free lunches for children at sites denoted with *.

 Fun For All sites are open through August 27 in these neighborhood parks:
