DEFINITION:
Performs diagnosis, repair, modification, and maintenance of City-owned vehicles and equipment which includes automobiles, construction equipment, emergency vehicles, motorcycles, and other small equipment.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Mechanic I is distinguished from Auto Service Worker classifications by the emphasis on diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems of equipment and vehicles with gas, diesel, and air-cooled engines. It is distinguished from Mechanic II by the emphasis on vehicle and equipment repair with no lead or administrative duties.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives supervision from a Public Works supervisor. May receive lead direction from Mechanic II.

May exercise lead direction over Auto Service Worker classifications.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:
Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in vehicles and equipment in order to identify and perform necessary repairs.

Performs general overhaul and engine repair work on motor vehicles, including fire equipment, and equipment with diesel, gasoline, water and air-cooled engines.

Performs adjustments and repairs to brakes, transmissions, ignition and lighting systems, cooling and heating systems and other vehicle and equipment systems.

May perform structural repair and fabrication employing a variety of welding techniques; may perform body and fender repair and painting; and glass replacement.

Performs emergency mechanical repairs in shop or in the field and troubleshoots malfunctions needing immediate repair.

Provides assistance and information to co-workers regarding specialized work such as testing and repairing computerized electronic controls in automobiles.

Inspects, replaces parts, and performs adjustments to keep equipment in good working condition.

Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.

May perform servicing and preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

Principles and methods of auto and truck repair and maintenance.

Hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.

Ability to:

Work independently and exercise independent judgment.

Diagnose mechanical difficulties and determine repairs needed.

Follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

Prioritize and organize work assignments.

Work well with co-workers.

Provide and wear personal protective equipment as required.

Be available and respond for emergency call-back as necessary.

Skill in:

The repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems of vehicles and equipment.

The operation of equipment and tools used in testing, repair, and making structural changes to vehicles and heavy equipment.

Fabricating and welding, depending on area of assignment.

Experience and Training Guidelines -- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Three years experience in vehicle and/or equipment mechanical repair.

Training:

Specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair.

License or Certificate

Possession of an appropriate, valid Oregon State driver's license with appropriate classification or endorsement as determined by the equipment operated.
