Dex Media, Inc., publisher of the official directory of Qwest customers, is in the process of distributing hundreds of thousands of new telephone books in the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan region. The new telephone books feature an expanded section called “the brown pages” which contain 8 pages of recycling and waste prevention information for residents of Eugene, Springfield, and greater Lane County.

“We saw a way to streamline the accessibility of recycling-related information for local residents by collaboratively developing recycling and waste disposal information within the new product offered by Dex Media,” said Pete Chism, Waste Reduction Coordinator for Lane County.

The City of Eugene partnered with the City of Springfield, and the Lane County Waste Management Division to pay for the expanded pages after seeing examples of similar pages developed by Douglas County in Oregon and the City of Vancouver, Washington.

Along with information about where to bring items for proper disposal the pages also outline how to contact a variety of recycling and waste related companies and organizations within the region.

“With 251,000 directories distributed in Eugene alone, this should become the source for consumer information about recycling and disposal. We're looking forward to a positive increase in recycling as a result of publishing this information in an easy to locate manner,” said Alex Cuyler, the City of Eugene's Recycling and Solid Waste Analyst.

The Dex directory itself is printed on 30% post consumer recycled content paper, primarily sourced from phone books collected in prior years. Residents are encouraged to recycle their directories along with their curbside collected scrap papers, or with low-grade papers at any of the Lane County transfer stations, whose locations and hours of operations can all be located within the brown pages!
